There were several factors that came into play for the decision to immigrate to the United States. These "push" factors included the following:

  • Massacres during the 19th Century
  • Russo-Japanese War in 1904
  • Jewish restrictions imposed by the government
  • Economic hardships
  • Jewish persecution
  • Industrialization
  • Overpopulation
  • Urbanization 

   

        As well as push factors there were also "pull" factors to why Jewish families considered immigrating to the United States. These factors included:

  • Freedom- from the government and for religion
  • Equality
  • Prosperity
  • Work opportunities
  • Mills
